August Trips and Bucket List

August ended up being a very different month to what was originally planned when I booked a great deal on a package holiday to Kos over bank holiday week. If you read my recent post how to find cheap flights in Europe you'll know that I recently realised that it's not always cheaper booking everything separately and took full advantage of a good package deal for a last minute break in the sun.

Unfortunately due to family illness we had to cancel our trip. As we already had our annual leave booked in at work we decided, once the family member was recovered and home, that we would have some spontaneous time exploring the local area instead.

Local days in August

Miller and Carter

At the start of the month, we finally got round to using some gift vouchers for Miller and Carter in Newcastle, one of my absolute favourite restaurants in the city. I wrote a full review when we visited last Christmas and I'm pleased to say it was just as good on this visit!

It's such a lovely place to visit if you want a special treat but at purse-friendly prices - keep an eye out for their specials and set menus. This time we visited on the restaurant week menu which was a good deal and a nice way to try some tasty steaks on a reasonable budget!

It's R Place Doughnut Delivery

I always thought there'd come a moment when I would decide that the hours of work put into my Instagram would pay off and I think this was it. One day I was working from home and waiting for a lunch time visit from a friend when It's R Place sent me a direct message asking if they could drop off half a dozen doughnuts for us to sample!

Of course my answer was a huge yes and just look at the fantastic selection which arrived. I am so glad it is my birthday in October so I can plan to order some of these instead of a cake - totally amazing. The biscoff nutella doughnut is a fairly new addition and my goodness it is good. They were all perfect in their own way - thanks guys! These were a gift but I will absolutely pay good money to order them again.

Druridge Bay

Over the absolutely scorching bank holiday weekend we had a day out to Druridge Bay, somewhere I have never visited despite hearing very good things about it. I loved it so much that I wrote a full blog post about our day out and what there is to do there - read the full post here

I love how it is both a beautiful beach and scenic park in one: truly not to be missed if you are in the area. These stepping stones were a little bit wobbly but fun at the same time!

A Trip to the Lake District

Langdale Estate

It has become a tradition for me and my partner to go to the Langdale Estate near Ambleside each October to celebrate our birthdays which are three days apart. He used to visit as a child and introduced me to the place, now I can't get enough.

After cancelling our holiday we still wanted to take some time out to relax and decided that Langdale was the best option to make sure we could get back quickly if needed. We decided on just one night as we aren't sure if we can claim our holiday cost back yet, so didn't want to spend a fortune. It's a lovely place but definitely one to save for a treat.

Booking directly with Langdale, we managed to get a fantastic deal including two days access to the Brimstone spa (my favourite) and lunch. I will be writing a full blog post about our stay this month, so look out for that. It's such an impressive place to stay with a fantastic spa, lodges for groups and two different hotels!

Keswick

Mary Mount Hotel

After one night at Langdale we had a look around for deals to extend our stay by another night in Keswick on our way back, somewhere I have never visited before. We found the Mount Mary hotel online situated not far from Keswick. We saw on their website that it is best to email them for last minute deals which we did. They offered us a decent discount and the place looked amazing so we headed straight there, excited to see somewhere different.

I was in awe of this place. Not trying to be fancy, it just ticked all the right boxes for us. Set right on the edge of a beautiful lake, it is the ideal spot to get away from it all. I will be writing a review of our lovely stay very soon so please look out for that: the food was a solid 10/10 and the grounds are fantastic.

Exploring Keswick

Neither of us could recall ever visiting Keswick before so we decided to have a nice potter round after checking out of our hotel. It was very rainy (typical Lake District!) but there were plenty of shops to dive into and escape the drizzle. The Beatrix Potter shop was very cute and we stumbled into some quirky art gallery shops as well.

It's a typical sleepy British town which makes a lovely, chilled escape when you just want to potter round the shops with nice cafe stops thrown in. I'm sure we will be re-visiting the Mary Mount hotel so we will be back to try some of the pubs and restaurants as we spotted a few tempting places to eat.

My Current Bucket List

I always worry that I won't have anything to write here but when it comes round to it I am never short of dream destinations to talk about! As part of our holiday to Kos we were due to see my dad in Bodrum which sadly had to be missed, so I will definitely be heading to Istanbul to see everyone soon (where my dad and his side of the family live).

Other trips on the horizon are Belfast in October and Prague in December, neither of which are booked yet so we will have to see! Now we are into the last quarter of 2019 (scary!) it is time to think about 2020 trips which is very exciting. One main country I've got my eye on is Portugal. I have only been to Portugal once for a weekend in Lisbon, which was great. I would love a trip next year to see the Algarve, back to Lisbon and onto Porto which seems to be a hot destination at the moment! Let me know if you've started thinking about your 2020 holidays yet as I am always looking for inspiration.

Thanks for following my adventures in August! Here's to September, a month which is 'back to reality' for many of us. I hope it's a great month for you all. Melis x

  1. My teen was in Langdale over the summer with NCS and she loved it, it looks beautiful. Fingers crossed you get your holiday money back via insurance. We have a few UK mini-breaks booked for later this year and then we have Corfu booked for two weeks at the end of May, I also really fancy a week in the canaries next October xx
